Comp Cam 68-232-4 with Crane Cams Springs

Post by indian »

I just finished the cam upgrade on my supercharged XJ 2001. Head is 0331, I had to switch to older style camshaft retaining with pin, bolt. Also changed the timing sprocket, chain, new comp cam lifters (small kit SK68-232-4).
I choosed the crane cams springs Nr.96806 with multi-fit retainers Nr. 99969 and multi-fit 7 deg. valve locks Nr. 99101. Because the crane cams locks are only single bead design I had to buy the pre 1997 valves with one groove. The newer valves have three groove design.

Springs spec are:
O.D. 1.437
I.D. 1.080
Installed height: 1.750
Spring rate: 204
Coil bind: 1.069
Max net lift: 0.620
Closed pressure at 1.750: 104

Crane spring vs stock spring:

The installed height by me was 1.710. I did not machined the valve springs seats, only added some type of locator:

It was not plug and play instalation, some minor modification was necessary. For example, the valve locks had to be grinded a little bit so the valve stem was higher and the rocker arm was not contacting the locks. Next the valve cover needed som grinding and higher seal because the springs hit the cover. I also grinded a little bit from the reatiners so retainer did not contact the valve stem seal at full lift.

Nice work!

I tried going the same route but only after I had the head installed and didn't want to mess with it.
