A couple ARP fastener questions

Post by nicpaige »

I have the part number for the ARP connecting rod bolts but I am unsure of the part number for the mains with a stock girdle? Do you use the studs or bolts and do you need a washer between the main and the girdle to space it up for the longer stroke?

There is no ARP bolt or stud that will work with the main girdle.

Do the 4.0 rods interfere with the girdle with the longer stroke crank? If I cant use the girdle anyway I could at least have some insurance with the better arp stud setup. Thanks for all the advice.

The rods will interfere. However, spacing the girdle about 1/8" with washers will allow ample clearance. Skip the ARP hardware here. There is really no need for it in this area.

I run the ARP head bolt set (not stud) just because I wasn't impressed with the quality of the stock replacements. Plus they are reusable.

So ARP main studs only work for 95 and older?

The studs will work for all 4.0L engines, but the main girdle will need the holes enlarged too much to use the girdle on the later engines.

But what about buying a girdle from eBay for a 91?

Same thing, you will need to enlarge the holes on the girdle for the studs.

But why are you saying the holes are being enlarged too much for later engines? Do you run out of material?

You need to understand that the main bearing BOLTS on the late model engine has a small stud sticking up from them for the main girdle. The stud is a smaller diameter than the bolt. If you got main bearing STUDS, the diameter is too large to use with a girdle. So yes, there isn't enough material to enlarge the holes on the girdle to work with main bearing STUDS.

Sorry for the caplock,,but I wanted to emphasize the difference between the two for ya.
