JTEC and SBEC2 tuning

Hello, I thought I would introduce myself here, as I have some expertise in the area of tuning these vehicles. I worked at a Dodge dealership in the 1990's as a "tune-up" technician and Viper specialist. At that time, there was only one company that could tune the Dodge controllers. There was a big demand for performance upgrades for the Viper, and tuning was one of the areas that people had little control over, so engine mods were usually catered to the stock engine calibration. Drivability issues were very common, even a basic mod such as a set of headers would trip check engine lights, and cause noticeable surging at part throttle, tuning capabilities were needed badly.

I was very motivated to figure out how to tune these controllers myself, and began the process of figuring out how to program and successfully modify calibrations. It took several years, but eventually I was able to re-flash and tune the JTEC ecu. I was doing this several years before SCT had released their 9550 programmer and Advantage tuning software for Dodge/Jeep. Although most of my tuning experience has been with Vipers, I have worked on Dakotas, Rams, and Jeeps, as both the SBEC2 and JTEC engine controller are shared between these vehicles.

Certainly since SCT has released their Dodge/Jeep tuning suit, a lot of people have started to offer calibration services. What is unique about what I do:

- My level of understanding of how these controllers work.

- When I tune cars in person, I use a ROM emulator so that all changes are made in real time.

- I frequently take on jobs that other tuners have given up on, especially heavily cammed projects.

- High speed data logging system, I use a tuning specific scan software with my own interface.

- SBEC2 ecus, I can tune these, some are flashable, while others need to be chipped.

- VIN re-write and SKIM-VTA delete

I would be very interested in working with people on this form, especially those within driving distance. Although remote tuning is ok, I always prefer to tune in person, and will allow me to expand my database of tunes for various 4.0/4.7 combinations.

OBD1 and OBD2 Jeep tuning (Renix, SBECII, JTEC, JTEC+, NGC) , re-programming via handheld programmer or bench flash.

well scratch that idea. have a friend who's looking for somebody to tune her 4.7 grand cherokee and turn off the tpms sensors

I am not sure if the folks here on JS fully understand what Chris is saying here.

SBEC2 is more commonly known as the OBD1 ECM which up to this point has been classified as being un-re-programmable.

JTEC is the OBD2 protocol.

This opens up a whole new world for us running OBD1 ECM`s. In conversation with Chris it seems that he has quite a bit of latitude in setting fuel and timing mapping. Granted there is still work to be done and knowledge to be gained but the opportunity now exists where we had nothing before.

I know this is a 6 cylinder stroker web site (I've built one) but I have a question. Can you remove the automatic transmission function of a JTEC computer without it tripping a check engine light?

Lets say I wanted to do a magnum 5.9L engine swap into a Jeep Wrangler that had a manual transmission and a PCI data bus. As far as I can tell Mopar never made a manual transmission JTEC computer with a PCI data bus. So if I want to do a V8 swap with a manual transmission, and stay emmission legal (no check engine light), I have to use a 1997-2000 Jeep wrangler (CCD data bus).

Yes that is possible, and I have done that before.
Thanks, that opens the door to more available options for my Jeep Wrangler truck build. :banana:
My bed is almost done and I am looking for a donor Wrangler to cut in half. This will get a 5.9 transplant.

Chris, I will have gathered the information you have requested in a couple days. Right now I am moving pretty slow with my recent stay at club Beaumont.

just saved me from doing an obd2 swap down the line.
92 XJ 4D custom borla header 3" exhaust flowmaster 50series muffler.

ATK on the way then an OBD 2 swap so flyin ryan can tune.
