1996 vs 1997 ECU

I am going to convert my 1991 Comanche to OBD2. I already have a 1996 cherokee engine and dash harness but I do not currently have an ECU. Can I use a 1997-1999 (pre coil pack) ECU or do I need to use a 1996 ECU to have everything work correctly? I heard that maybe the 1991-1996 tach does not work with the 1997-1999 ECUs? If true is there an easy modification to make it work?
