Machine work check

What do you guys check after a machine shop does a rebuild on your motor, and how do you go about checking? I have a .030 over block getting done and they are milling the head and block. I was thinking about getting a straight edge to check the deck, but also would like to check the bore and journals to make sure they are correct.

Your question implies that you're receiving a rebuilt engine from your machine shop.

Are you picking up a assembled short block with a rebuilt cylinder head? Or are you getting back a fully machined block that you're going to put together yourself?

Also be aware that your factory 0331 head casting that came on your XJ has been known to have cracking issues.
Would be a good time to consider a replacement.
