What is cause behind a 258 sounding a little like a diesel?

My 258 overheated due to a cooling problem. Now it sounds like a diesel at idle with the hood up, but you can't really hear it with the hood closed.

What is the likely problem?
Stroker: 4.59L, SCR 9.47, Hesco 1995 MPI with adjustable FPR, TJ intake connected to grill, aftermarket OEM-size exhaust.
CJ-8: mostly stock, but becoming less so.
D44 rear, 2.73 gears on 31", T-176

They are subject to excessive rocker arm bridge wear and lifter noise, that's probably what you're hearing?
You can get more power out of ANY engine!!!

Something warped from the heat possibly causing a broken piston/skirt? Anything like that making noise is going to require the motor coming apart.
