Anyone running a 700R4 or 4L60E in their Wrangler??

Post by cpu77 »

Anyone have a a TJ with a GM 700R or a 4L60E with their stroker? I would like to do a 6L80E. Would any of these fit or are they too long?

I'm not running any of those, but they should work. I've got a AW4 in my wrangler and its longer. BTW: It will be expensive to put a non-jeep computer controlled trans behind a jeep engine due to the expense of a stand alone computer. I'd like to put a 700r4/Atlas II in place of my AW4/np231 one of these days.

Yes you can buy 700R4's that do not require a ECM. I had one in old camaro. The 4l60's require a ECM. How much power loss is there between a manual and a auto? I wondered if if a 260-270hp stroker would make it less noticeable? I have a bad foot and the clutch causes very painful nerve pressure.

The one I had experience with was throttle valve (TV) shifted. Adjusting it is a little more complicated than a kick down cable.

Is your Jeep stroked? I am hoping a Auto won't zap too much power after I stroke it.

Yes, I'm running a 4.6 stroker. I've read in some AW4 posts that poeple claim it (AW4) has a parasitic loss of 30-34%. My biggest issue with the AW4 is it takes a lot to keep it cool, so much so that its causing my engine to run hot at HWY speeds. I've read posts that a typical auto trans has 23-27% loss vs. a manual trans that has 15-20% loss.

I'm running a 4.6, AW4, JK D44's w/4.10's and 35's and it runs good. It will hold OD at 70 mph up a steep grade on the interstate and I believe 70 is 2000ish rpm. I haven't checked the mpg's since I installed the 35's, but when I had 33's I was getting around 17mpg mixed driving on a 150 mile daily round trip. I would like to re-gear to 4.88's to make-up for the off the line loss and better crawl ratio from when I switched from 33's to 35's. If I had started with 35's after the stroker install I would have been happy, it works really good with the current setup, it just had a more gitty up with the 33's.

Hope that helps,

The only way I am going Auto is with a stroker and a 700R4. My current setup is a 99TJ with 70k Has I6/AX15 5spd/4.56gears/33" Tires. I currently get a average of 13.3mpg. My driving rarely brings me over 3k RPMS. Did you see a significant increase in power from idle to 3k? Does the engine rev after being stroked? What are you doing for tuning?

As for Transmissions...
The 700R has a better OD then the AW4. AW4 are 2.80, 1.53, 1.00 & .75. The 700R4 is 3.06, 1.63, 1, .70. MY current Ax15 is 3.83, 2.33, 1.44, 1.00, 0.79. Obviously not doing swaps or strokers for MPG but it is a consideration:)

Like cpu, I have a 700R4 in a '68 camaro. It is TV cable controlled and you set the TV cable based on pressure readings. Not very difficult and definitely not computer controlled. If you use a lock-up convertor (and you should), you'll need to connect a circuit to your brake pedal to unlock the convertor in case you have to slam on the brakes. If you don't, it can stall the vehicle. When I wired mine, I included an LED in the circuit so that I could tell power was being fed to the solenoid. There's lots of info on the Internet...

I am also interested in the 700r4 install as my 42rle won hold my horsepower. It has been rebuilt 3 times and 4th is gone again. I am running a supercharged 4.6. I need input on the pcu issue as to how to disconnect it for the 7oor4. Also what inputs does my computer need? Anyone??
