Rebuild + Mild Stroker Build

Hello, my engine suffered low oil lubrication recently and the number 3 crankshaft journal is out of round. I've decided to rebuild the engine rather than buy another Cherokee. Can I just buy an Enginetech Rebuild Kit and a refurbed 258 crank or should I buy a stroker kit for like a grand and a rebuild kit minus the pistons and bearings? Just trying to keep it a budget rebuild and might just send it to the machine shop for a hot tank and maybe a hone/ bore to 030 if needed?

If you’re able to obtain a good 258 crankshaft that’s been properly ground at a fair price that could be a potential cost savings strategy over shipping a Scat crank across the country.

I have a forged piston steel rod combination that I think would be worth considering. Besides the obvious benefits of them being forged rather than cast there are some cost savings that you’ll save in machine work that will help offset the upgrade cost of the package.

So I went out and bought a 1997 head and plan to DIY port it with a 97 gasket, so my current recipe looks like this

Clegg Stroker Kit:
Scat Jeep 4.2L 3.895" stroke crank
Refurbished Jeep 4.0L 6.125" rods
Icon 4032 Forged Dish Pistons -27.5cc #IC668

Renix Block
DIY Ported 1997 Cylinder head
Renix Intake and Exhaust Manifolds
Ford Injectors 24lbs
Renix Throttle Body

But I was wondering what kind of head gasket I should go with, should I deck the block and if going with a stock Renix cam is the way to go since I hear the ECU doesn't like other cams

Your 0630 HO cylinder head will not be compatible with your Renix manifold

Just update to the '00+ intake manifold, HO throttle body, and '91-'99 aftermarket header. It's pointless building what is effectively a HO stroker and then choking it with the Renix intake and exhaust.
I bought my '00+ intake manifold with PS pump and bracket as a complete unit from a junkyard to make the swap easier.

Can I just bore out the throttle body so I dont have to screw around with adapting the TPS? The intake and exhaust manifold swap doesn't look THAT tedious :roll:

Yes you can. The Renix throttle body can be safely bored out from 51mm to 58mm. You'll need to make a throttle plate to match and ensure it's positioned at the same angle as the stock one when closed.
