Picking a cam for a Clegg 4.6L stroker kit

Post by mwknives »

Hello all,

Newbie here with the dreaded cam question. I bought a Clegg Stage 1 kit with the following:

Stage 1 Jeep Stroker Kit 4.6L 8.8:1C.R.
KB Hypereutectic Dish Pistons -27.5cc #KB421 bore size .030"
Scat 9000 Series Crankshaft 3.895” Stroke #9-4.2L-3895
Scat Forged Connecting Rods 4.0L 242ci 6.125”

I was originally going to use a Comp Cam 68-232-4, but the more I read about Comp Cams, the more horror stories I hear.Does anyone have any recommendations for other cams? or has anyone had recent experience with a Comp Cam that made it past 20K that would recommend them? I see a lot of people recommending LSA 114's from 505 and elsewhere. What's the consensuses on these?

With the correct camshaft break in procedure, and the proper oil additive or better yet, purpose made break in oils with the correct valve springs, camshaft failures including Comp's are fairly rare.

One of but not the only reason I use Comp Cams in all the stroker's builds including kits is they have a in-house heat treating process that alowes the choice of having your camshaft nitrided. This in itself virtually will eliminate any chance of your camshaft ever going flat.

The KB421 wouldn't of been my first choice in Pistons because of its torque killing low compression full circular dish design. Because of the low compression and no quench capabilities camshaft selection will even be more critical as to not reduce manifold vacuum more than necessary. For that reason the 232 would be a good choice, or a special cam profile that Comp grinds for me utilizing the same specs as the 68-232-4 but with a lower intake lift of .435 and .448 for the exhaust allowing for the use of a stock valve spring.
I stock both of these camshafts with or without nitriding.

Feel free to shoot me a call or email if I can help out in anyway.
