First Start 2003+ 4.6 Stroker

Post by Jrama403 »

Its finally time to start my engine (tomorrow). Any tips for the first start on a 2003+ (Distributor less Ignition) stroker?

I have done some reading and aside from properly priming the engine oil pressure, it seems to be a crank and start operation. Am I missing something?

Cheers

Just make sure that the engine has oil that's high in ZDDP (or with additive), and run it at 2000-2500rpm for at least 20 minutes to break in the cam.

Sounds good, Just seems odd to be doing nothing for timing etc. aside from lining up the timing gears, and sticking in the camshaft sensor

Pro tip- So with a distributor less Ignition you need to bring Cyl #1 to TDC, remove crankshaft sensor, remove the cap, align the holes, re-install sensor. Will start first time every time.

You may have some mild leaks when you fire.

You need to keep it at rpm while the cam breaks in. I had a pretty good tranny leak from a split o-ring and just kept adding tranny fluid until the break in procedure was over. As long as the leak is not life threatening let it ride and get the cam broken in, then fix the little stuff.

Is it okay to stop in the middle and restart?

Absolutely Chris.
Restarting is not a problem.

It's important to understand that the purpose of the camshaft break-in procedure of initially running the engine approximately 2000 to 2500 rpm is to get oil splashing on the cam and lifters so the lfters will spin in their bores during the critical initial break-in period.
Stopping and restarting won't inhibit this process.

Good to know, thanks! I'm probably going to break my break in into 2 halves on hopes of pissing off my neighbors a little less :)
