Unless you’re building an engine for a cropduster or an engine in a dirty environment with poor air filtration there’s no real good reason to run a chrome top ring.

Yes the chrome ring is hard to break in, but the real deterrent is that they are harder on cylinder walls.

With that said we do use chrome rings on some supercharged and turbocharged engine applications because detonation can cause the moly to flake off the top ring In severe conditions that you wouldn’t find in a normally aspirated engine such as in our Jeeps.

So the chrome is really far into the specialty part area.

And we want to avoid using it to avoid having to rehone our blocks?

Go with a Moly ring with a 400ish grit finish.
I prefer a 5/64 5/64 3/16 std oil tension oil ring package for 200k plus street engines. That is the ring set you’ll need if you choose to run the KB 944 piston or any OEM replacement Jeep piston pre metric.
