Another Jeep
So I've been browsing craigslist for xjs with issues so I can fix em up and sell them. I found a white 95(limited trim?--the one w/ grey bottom and grey spokes, all-power)auto 4dr 4x4 w/ a "cracked engine" 238K for $600 obo and free towing up to 100mi(45mi in my case). I also found a black 6/96(maybe has the 29spl axles) 4dr 4x4 ax15 w/ 206K and claimed bad clutch&master and needs brakes for $700obo. I have the 96 engine w/ 75K that I took out of mine that's sitting in my parent's shed. I also have a clutch w/ 65-75% life left on it sitting around as well. So I planned on seeing them both tonight. I ended up buying the black one and didn't get around to checking out the white one. The black one had been sitting since "the spring" when the Goodyear shop told them it was gonna cost $1,200 to replace clutch and master. It had to be jump started, right headlight installed(they had one in the back), connected the e-fan plug, a/c works, manual locks and windows, f r bumper banged in a bit and the rr bumper is banged in pretty good, but body is sound. Rear diff is oily, as is the valve cover and rear main area(could have slave issues). Anyhow to get it moving, you have to rev it a bit in N and then put it in 2nd. The batt was low so starting off in 1st was a no no. Suspension is solid, tail-pipe is wired up(needs new hanger). Fuel pump is noisy, aftermarket shift knob super loose. One half-dollar sized rust hole on drivers side edge of floor pan right above flat part. Anyhow I offered $400 and she said $500. I marinated on that for a min or two and offered $450--she was adamant about $500, so I took it. Front tires are 215/70/15s w/ 75% life and rears are 235/75/15s w/ 10%. I didn't get to try out the 4wd, but now I'm glad because there is probably an issue w/ the two different tire sizes. I drove it home on the beltway doing 75 and the engine, tranny, and suspension are good. So it'll take some hours and $500 to get it up to spec, but I figure I can make 2x what I put into it if I don't sell it to my dad or a friend.

Re: Another Jeep
Sterling VA--I still might go for it if it's still on Craig's in a week or two. They claimed it only needed an engine and that the brakes were new, two tires were new, radiator was new, HG new 10K ago. It just needed an oil fill "every 2 miles" if you drove it. I wanted to see a crack in the block or head, but it's probably still an HG issue with the typical worse case rear main seal leak. I've got to hurry up and put that nice NVH 75K 96 engine in something soon before it rots. I figure some yuppy in the DC area will be willing to pay 2K for a white auto ltd cherokee w/ all the options and a 75K engine, right?

Re: Another Jeep
I'm sorry yuppy, but in this dc/metro area a loaded out white Jeep with those fancy spokes will probably appeal to a "yuppy"(probably the epitome of a yuppy xj--what color is yours btw?). I guess I've been true to my more common self by always(unintentionally) getting bone stock xjs w/ AC being the only option. The black 96 is another XJ that I have to swap to the tach cluster(this might be 4 out of 5 for me), that's how base it is. I drove it to my parent's today. Filled the master with brake fluid and she shifts fine, so no clutch job necessary in the near future. The slave might be leaking so I'll take it out and look later this week. Anyhow, you obviously take pride in your yuppiness or your xj's(ergo your handle), so you can't be too offended. Let me know if you or someone you know are interested in a white 95 auto 4x4 xj with a 75K engine. I'm a lover not a hater.

Re: Another Jeep
90 Dover Grey XJ with Gold limited package that replaced an 88 Dover Grey XJ with gold limited package.
Next in queue is a 90 Red limited XJ with Gold limited package. (getting a quick respray and interior clean, then it goes to my teenager)
Wife has a teal 94 sport with the grey leather interior from the 88 limited (I flopped in on its side)
I just get the limiteds because they seem to never get put in 4wd or properly abused as a jeep should.
The leather and power options are nice.

Re: Another Jeep
I'm always getting 2dr 2wd 4.0 5-speeds w/ac as only option(88,92,94,and now 96, got my bro Andrew a 93, Nick has a 4wd 4dr ax15 95, and now the black 4dr 4wd ax15 96 that might go to dad)so Jeep assumes that since it's cheaper (than a 4wd auto) that it can be stripped down. They give all autos a tach and the lower model 5-speeds a big gas gauge and dummy lights(I even had one that didn't come w/ a pass side mirror).

Re: Another Jeep
I'd love a man trans, but the 3 last manual transmission cars I had ended up losing gears.
83 Honda civic had to hold it in second...after a while it wouldn't stay no matter how hard you pulled on the shifter
88 Isuzu Trooper lost 2nd and 4th
89 VW fox... on clutch drop too many took out reverse and 1st (parking was a pain, turned out it was $.75 snap ring that snapped)
I'm a bit less brutal on my junk now, since I do all my own wrenching, and not just replace the car (ahh teenage years no money too much time, Now I have neither)
