Re: Piston Dishing Questions and gasket suprise
Hey Chris, guess what showed up today from Summit (as linked above)? A .040 uncrushed MLS mopar performance gasket. Part number stamped on the gasket is 53010587AA

Re: Piston Dishing Questions and gasket suprise
There are two gaskets made by Victor. One WAS like the MP one. The other one is MLS. Now I am confused. The original MP gasket I purchased was not MLS, but the other one (can someone tell me that the other one is made of?). I have used both the MP and Victor in teh past and they both weren't MLS.. maybe they changed it?

Re: Piston Dishing Questions and gasket suprise
I can't find manufacturers symbols, and the part number on the gasket itself appears to be an actual mopar number. I guess they went back into production? I'm tempted to list mine for sale, but i think i may keep it in the event that i need to pull my head (although i'm counting on getting 100k miles before anything like that would have to happen)
EDIT: A search on a mopar parts website yields positive for 53010587AA as being a head gasket for all models 96 - 06
As usual, here comes my 56k unfriendly pictures

Re: Piston Dishing Questions and gasket suprise
Verdict: The Victor Reinz and Mopar Performance multi-layer steel head gaskets are the same units?

Re: Piston Dishing Questions and gasket suprise
Judging by the pictures, they sure do look identical. However, i don't know why Victor would make the gasket to have Mopar stamp their name/number on it. I would think victor would stamp their number on it and mopar would just put it in one of their own boxes.

Re: Piston Dishing Questions and gasket suprise
That is how it was with the original MP gasket. It was made by Victor then stamped with MP's name. Different style gasket but same thickness as this new one. I'll have to take pics of the old one vs new one when i pick it up.Mgardiner1 wrote:Judging by the pictures, they sure do look identical. Re: Piston Dishing Questions and gasket suprise
That is what it sounds like to me and I like. That was my only hesitation running the Victor gasket in teh first place.. that I wanted a MLS.. plus its great that they are producing the .041" gasket again. Also, Victor said that it was a .041" gasket. maybe at the blue area it is?

Re: Piston Dishing Questions and gasket suprise
Are those rivets going to prevent the cylinder head from correctly compressing the gasket? Its a fairly common problem with the FelPro 1133 gaskets on a SB Ford.

Re: Piston Dishing Questions and gasket suprise
I was curious of the same thing. However i do not have a bare head or block to hold it up to, to see where the rivets will land. I didn't mic the rivets either, although they are clearly thicker then the gasket itself

Re: Piston Dishing Questions and gasket suprise
I've used that type of gasket in a 4.0L twice and never had a sealing issue. I remember thinking the same thing prior. Sometime this week i should be picking up my gasket and such so I can compare it to my head.

Re: Piston Dishing Questions and gasket suprise
I just put the Victor version in my stroker, and I can tell you, there is no problem. It works fantastically, as my stroker runs well and does not knock (due to excellent quench).

Re: Piston Dishing Questions and gasket suprise
Just picked up two of the Mopar part# P-4259242 head gaskets today (Dec.8) at noon. I haven't measured them to be sure, but they
should be the 0.043' thickness. That is one for the future stroker, and one for the 2001 XJ (with the not yet cracked,0331 head).
After I ordered them from the dealership (Dec. 3) there were still five in the Mopar parts system. They were about $6.00 less than
the price Summit shows on their website.

Re: Piston Dishing Questions and gasket suprise
I just checked and the rivets fall in to areas that don't have metal on either side, so they are fine.Alex22 wrote:Are those rivets going to prevent the cylinder head from correctly compressing the gasket? Its a fairly common problem with the FelPro 1133 gaskets on a SB Ford.
