Re: 4.6L titan
Spark plug heat range is often miss under stood, for the most part. and the new "Diamond fire" spark plug don't help the situation at allRedtj35 wrote:Which champion spark plugs do i need to run. I think I'm running a hotter plug from champion. could that cause a ticking noise underload?

heat range has nothing to do with how hot of a spark the plug will produce. A hot, and A cold, heat range will make the same spark. period!!!!
The heat range has to do with how quick the plug will heat up(helps keep carbon build up, from fouling a plug) or how well it can get rid of the heat from the plug to the cooling system, thru the head into the cooling system(colder heat range=, less change of spark knock)
If you have a hotter spark plug then is recommended, it WILL cause ping, pre ignition, spark knock .......what ever you want to call it!
Call Titon, install what ever plug they recommend. It may or may not stop the knock, but it will be much improved!!!!!!!!
If i have cause confusion, Please ask , as you really need to under stand this consept.......Or atleast let Titan choose the first step(heat range) for you. then you can play around with different ranges from there.
I thing you have found you problem. If you have put a step or two hotter plug in there, the plug will not remove the heat fast enought, and causing the plug to acutaly glow like a glow plug in a diesel............Fuel fires before the spark ever get to the plug, when the eng is hot..............Kind fits you simptoms

Let us know how it turns out

Re: 4.6L titan
What size injectors are you running and what voltage do you have your MAP adjuster set at?
You could try indexing your distributor because you may find that's slightly off, especially when you have an aftermarket cam. Here's my article describing how to do it (you don't need to remove the valve cover):
http://www.angelfire.com/my/fan/dist_index.html
Getting the distributor set right can make a huge difference. I would advise against messing with the CPS.
FWIW I'm running Ford Racing 24lb injectors, homebrew MAP adjuster set at 5.10v, Champion RC12LYC plugs, 91 octane, and no ping even now that it's 113-120*F outside. The Jeep goes like a raped ape (1/4 mile in 14.7 @ 94) and the dyno numbers speak for themselves.

I have 24 lb injectors. And my jeep is distributor-less. Also i think im running the same plugs u r. Im going to go get some of the Champion RC9YC4 to see what happens.
I have adj, my map sensor from like 5-6.20volts and nothing changes it seems like. Stock voltage was 5.15volts in my TJ. I hoope its pinging im experiecing not a major problem!!!

Yes, I hope so also. I do remember a post about someone having major problems with a Titan stroker...bad cam, bad valve guides. You might want to check your rockers to see how much valve lash you have, and hopefully you haven't flattened a cam lobe.Redtj35 wrote:I have 24 lb injectors. And my jeep is distributor-less. Re: 4.6L titan
If the cam was just starting to fail, Then NO....For the most part you are right, it would make noise at idle as well and running down the road. BUT you noise is only when its hot, and under a load.( you said 3 or 5 gear)Redtj35 wrote:But wouldnt I be hearing the noise all the time if it was something serious??
So, my money is on detonation problem Cause by the wrong spark plug heat range.................What grade of fuel or gas or you running?????

Re: 4.6L titan
Im running 93 octane. Later this week im gunna make a more beefy adj. map sensor and mount it in the cab away from the heat of the motor. Chuck said that also might be a problem why the map volage is changing.

Redtj35: Where is that video you were going to post? Being that you can take a video of it, it actually may not be pinging. Or is this video of when you are driving?

Re: 4.6L titan
I replaced the plugs with the champions recommended by golen and still there is ticking. Ill get the video asap.\
Another thing is when i was looking at the directions to build an adj. map sensorhttp://go.jeep-xj.info/HowtoMAPsensor.htm. And it says cut the purple and white wire but on my TJ I dont have the purple and white wire mines I think is orange but the other 2 wires are the same color as in the diagram. Did i do this right. Also where do i test my volage from and with or without the ignition on?

Sorry for the n00b question but I have a titan 4.7 in my TJ and just came across this forumdwg86 wrote:Yes, I hope so also. I was wondering how to check the valve lash, as I will be indexing my distributor and will have the valve cover off anyway

They are Hyd, no adj necessary..............If it sounds like it need a valve adj........it probably need a new cam and lifters.AlexTJ wrote:Sorry for the n00b question but I have a titan 4.7 in my TJ and just came across this forumdwg86 wrote:Yes, I hope so also. Thanks, but how I can I check the valve lash to see if those things are good?Flash wrote:They are Hyd, no adj necessary..............If it sounds like it need a valve adj........it probably need a new cam and lifters.AlexTJ wrote:Sorry for the n00b question but I have a titan 4.7 in my TJ and just came across this forumdwg86 wrote:Yes, I hope so also. the valve lash is held at 0 by the Hyd lifter when the eng is running.
