Engine Weight

Post by Mr.Mopar »

Just wondering if anyone knows the weight of a complete 4.0? Specifically a 1996. Curious what a 4.2 weighs complete?

Thanks

A "bare" 6-242 crate tips around 550-600#. Figure accessories are going to add 40-50# or so - call it 650# for a "heavy guesstimate."

The 6-258 should be somewhat similar - even though the bore is smaller (meaning less material to make the cylinder walls,) and it's an older casting that wasn't lightened. So, I'd figure the bare 6-258 crate to be up around 600-625#, with a similar figure for bolt-ons.

Either way, you're likely to end up in the range of 600-700#. Price of having a durable seven-main I6!

A 4.0 weighs about the same as an AMC V8? They weigh approximately 550 lbs.

I really don't think those numbers are right, 550# seems a bit high. A 400 Mopar big block wieghs in at 330#. No way that the I6 weighs more then a Big Block. I can pick up and carry a bare 4.0 block myself.
Some body needs to weigh one.

IIRC the block weights about 250, the crank weights around 45, loaded head is 75, The cam is around 10, figure another 10 for the pushrods, lifters and rockers, 3 for the oil pump, and figure another 20 for pistons and rods. You are right around 410 with out oil pan, valve cover, water pump, timing set, timing cover, etc. I do know that the 4.7L V8 clocks in under the I6 weight.

I guess the 4.0 is no light weight lol Not much of a weight savings from an AMC V8

Not trying to be argumentative, but if the bare block weighs 250# I must be stronger than I think. I picked up my bare block and set it in the back of my truck.

The 258 (and older) blocks were a little heavier than a 4.0. Through about 1980 both intake and exhaust manifolds were cast iron and very heavy. I would estimate about 75-100lb more than a 4.0, including manifolds.
