What injectors and throttle body are you using?

Comanche91 wrote:Got the 2001 WJ intake manifold mounted and the Unichip wired in on my 4.5L Hesco stroker and had the Unichip programmed and was dynoed at Hesco today; amazing results. The dyno peak HP vs. torque BEFORE readings last year were 207.5 HP @ 3950 RPM, torque was 243.0 at this RPM. Peak torque was 280 @ 3600 RPM. The AFTER reading, manifold only, was 219.5 HP @ 3916 RPM, torque at 294.9. The AFTER reading w. manifold and Unichip, was 261.1 HP @ 4400 RPM, with torque at 312.8. Peak torque was 345 @ 3500 RPM. All readings are at the rear rear wheel of course. :D

That's a HP increase of 53.6 (although at a higher RPM, 3950 vs. 4400) and a torque increase of 65 ft. lbs. at about the same 3500 RPM, even w. the 20%-25% power robbing AW-4. Just the updated intake w/o the chip gave impressive gains. Very worthwhile mods.
Amazing dyno numbers. Can you post the dyno charts?

Outstanding! Why do I suspect this new found response will likely not improve realized mpg. I found it interesting to see your 99 intake numbers. Torque increase was as I suspected but HP was higher. My butt dyno isn't calibrated as well as Lee's shop equipment. Good to see those numbers.

Hi Dino. I don't have a scanner, but I'll drop the charts off at a friend's and have them do it, and will post tomorrow. Would like to have you guys comment on them. Don

Do you know what compression you are running? The LSA on the cam and where the ICL is installed? I am really impressed with this setup...261hp and 345 torque at the rear wheels! WOW, must be fun to drive.

All I have is a lot of Hesco part numbers that don't mean much to me. If you call or email Bennie or Lee at Hesco, they can provide all the info for their HES4.5 engine, w. the RV-O-B cam, 1.6 valves, HESDP45030 piston set and HES9-3127 double roller timing set. It runs great on regular grade fuel with no pinging. Kyung, if you read this, you can probably fill in the compression ratio and cam LSA, since we have the same motor AFAIK (except you have the alloy head!). :D And heck yeah, it's fun to drive in the lightweight MJ.

I suspect you are right John, but according to Hesco there have been quite a few feedbacks to them reporting increased MPG due to the more efficient burn w. the 99 intake and Unichip. But it all really boils down exerting self restraint on the olde skinny pedal I think more than anything. And yeah, the peak HP was higher than I expected too, especially at that RPM, which I seldom see. :o :o I'll soon find out in the next few tankfuls.

Mostly in AW-4 3 position; since the peak readings were in the 3500+ RPM range and 3 locks out the OD and allows the most precise RPM control.

Compression on your motor, Don, is about 9.4:1. LSA for the rvob cam is 110 degrees. I've got the h264 cam in mine which has a LSA of 114 degrees. Compression on my motor with the Al head is around 10:1. I sure wish I could get it over to hesco someday for a "custom" tune on their dyno. Maybe I'll make a roadtrip in the future.

Thanks Kyung. Have you ever had a dyno run on your rig? I'd bet that alum head makes a heck of a difference.

Here are the dyno charts, with last readings superimposed. One is for the new manifold only, the other is the manifold + Unichip:

Good question. TBD. Maybe :o or :D. I'm hoping the latter.
Well, been running around all weekend hauling materials since we're installing new hardwood floors in the house (because the Commander wants them. :| ). I noticed while driving back from Hesco Birmingham that the engine would stumble at around 2000 RPM or so when going up a long grade and the AW-4 hasn't downshifted out of OD yet. It would stumble only once. It did it maybe four times on the hour drive back home. I re-adjusted the throttle cable (it was off) and drove mostly all day Saturday hauling materials, no stumbling at all. Then late Saturday I had a crapload of wood in the back and was going up a long steep grade, and it popped three quick times right at the same RPM going up the grade. I put the bypass plug in to take the UniChip out of the ECU circuits, and drove around most of the day today trying to duplicate the conditions, and no stumbling problems at all. SO, all I can conclude is there is a dead spot at that RPM range when the AW-4 is laboring, and it's caused by the UniChip. The good news is that I filled it up tonight, and averaged 16.5 MPG, all local stop and go driving, which is about 1.5 miles higher than before. And I had my foot in it almost constantly. :D

So it looks like back to Hesco next week for some more UniChip tuning. I'm thinking it may be tuned too aggressively? Buy dayem, it flies.......
